1 dead in resort apartment fire on Australia's Gold Coast

SYDNEY, May 30 (Xinhua) -- One person died following a fire in a resort apartment in Broadbeach on Australia's Gold Coast on Saturday.

The Queensland Police Service said in a statement that police and emergency services were called to an address on Surf Parade following reports of smoke coming from a unit at around 11 a.m. local time.

Upon arrival, they found the unit fully engulfed in flames and extinguished the fire a short time later. During a search of the unit, a person was located. Despite immediate CPR efforts, the person was declared deceased a short time later.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reported that the victim was an elderly woman, and she was found in the bedroom of an apartment on level three of a resort where the fire broke out.

ABC added that six people were treated at the scene, including one person in a life-threatening condition and one who was taken to hospital due to smoke inhalation.
