SYDNEY, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Football Australia (FA) on Friday announced that Socceroos head coach Tony Popovic has signed a contract extension through to the 2027 AFC Asian Cup.
In a statement issued ahead of Australia's 2026 FIFA World Cup opening game against Trkiye in Vancouver on Saturday, the FA said that Popovic has agreed to a new contract to lead the men's national team through the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, which will be held in Saudi Arabia.
Popovic, who made 58 appearances as a player for the men's national team, was appointed as head coach of the Socceroos in 2024 and has recorded 10 wins and four draws in 18 matches in the role.
"It has been an honor and a privilege to lead the Socceroos, and it is a role that I thoroughly enjoy and one I have never taken for granted," he said in a statement.
Following Saturday's match against Trkiye, Australia will face the United States and Paraguay in the group stage at the World Cup.
